In 2024, Light Moves welcomed six Studio Light Moves: Open Futures artists to Limerick for two residency periods in June and December, focusing on the intersection of dance, technology and digital practice. The three pairs of artists were selected through a competitive open call, and their proposed areas of research offered bold and diverse approaches to interdisciplinary exchange. Open Futures 2024 was curated by Laura Murphy and Jürgen Simpson.

The residency provided time, space, mentorship and technical support to explore new creative possibilities at the meeting point of movement and technology. In 2024, the artists were resident at Dance Limerick, the Digital Media & Arts Research Centre (DMARC) and the Irish World Academy of Music & Dance at the University of Limerick, and Limerick City Gallery of Art.

Artists

The 2024 Open Futures artist pairs were:

Stephanie Keane and Paddy Mulcahy (IRL)
Matías Homar and an0th3r.l0p3z (USA)
Billy Kemp and Sophie Hutchinson (IRL)

On Friday 6 December at Dance Limerick, the artists shared a showing of their research in progress, offering insights into their processes, experiments and early findings developed over the two residency periods.

Artist Projects

Irish traditional dance artist Stephanie Keane and electronic music composer/producer Paddy Mulcahy engaged in a new creative research practice focused on integrating percussive dance with music technology. Their research explored real-time and interactive sound, experimenting with new approaches to live performance, sound design for screen dance and theatre, and collaborative processes that merge contrasting art forms.

Using the GEP Tebukuro and GEPedal (interactive wearable MIDI controllers responsive to movement), the Matías Homar and an0th3r.l0p3z explored real-time sound creation and modification through generative music methods, Pure Data and MIDI sequencing. In 2024, they expanded their practice into real-time visual generation using TouchDesigner, creating an audio-visual system that responds directly to dance and musical performance.

Throughout the residency, Billy Kemp and Sophie Hutchinson investigated processes of high-speed image capture and motion detection. Their work centred on gathering material in an expanded temporal space and then experimenting with its transformation and translation across different media formats.

Masterclass Series

As part of the wider Open Futures 2024 programme, Studio Light Moves: Open Futures presented a two-part Masterclass Series at Dance Limerick, aimed at professional artists working in dance, performance, technology, music and production..
