Screendance artist Anna Macdonald and socio-legal scholar Marie-Andrée Jacob host a conversation about the challenges of working with consent in Screendance.

Consent has become a central issue for the arts in recent years. When submitting work to film festivals, artists are often asked, ‘How did you negotiate consent in this work?’- a reminder of the potential power imbalances between camera and subject. Whilst consent is often practised and understood as a form of care for those we work with, it also raises difficult logistical and ethical challenges for practitioners. When does consent begin and end in the process of making our work, and what happens when it is withdrawn, elusive, or no longer valid?

This roundtable invites the Lightmoves community to reflect on how we, as screendance makers, approach consent in our work. The event will start with Anna and Marie sharing insights from their AHRC-funded research project, Choreography of Consent: Experiments in Dance/Law methods, before opening up discussion around areas such as:

  • When and how we ask for consent in screendance
  • How we navigate the power dynamics between performers, editors, and directors
  • How we handle consent when working with archives or found footage
